GETTING TO THE sanctuary

DIRECTIONS

The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and cabins are a 90 minute (140 kilometre) drive from Penneshaw and a 60 minute (100 kilometre) drive from Kingscote via South Coast Road( travel times are longer from late afternoon until mid morning due to wildlife activity) .

Take the South Coast Road for 80.5 km from the airport intersection. At the 76km mark there is a dirt road to Hanson Bay Cabins. Please remain on the South Coast Road and go another 4km for the sanctuary. Look for the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary sign. Follow the dirt driveway and stop in at the visitor centre/cafe.

DRIVING ON Kangaroo Island

There are 3 main types of road that you may encounter on Kangaroo Island. I list them below and then include a broad daylight recommended maximum speed and other times recommended maximum speed ( from 1 hour before dusk until 2 hours after dawn when the wildlife is most active) .Please also refer to the videos tab for the "Driving on Kangaroo Island video.

Sealed Roads 80- 100 kph and 50-70 kph

Improved dirt roads which have a hard limestone surface 80 kph and 50- 60 kph

Unimproved dirt roads that have a red laterite surface 60 kph and 50 kph. These roads are treacherous and should be treated with great respect.  They are very deceptive and look and feel easy to drive on. The problem is if you brake the surface suddenly feels like ice.

Hanson Bay Road is an improved dirt road and is generally very easy to navigate.  Hanson Bay Sanctuary is on the sealed road that connects Penneshaw and Kingscote to Flinders Chase and Remarkable Rocks.
